Boat travel connected Maizaka with Arai. There was a checkpoint close to the boat landing. Laws against the “entrance of guns and exit of women” were strictly enforced. There were checkpoint inspectors called “women investigators,” and these were hated by the women, who they took the overland route to avoid the inspection stations. Members of feudal processions crossed the sea by boat, their feathered spear standards stick up from the boats.
