Tilson’s work is a tribute to Italy, an expression of continued enchantment and awe at every new discovery of artistic value layered here through the centuries. Prompted by his particular fascination for Byzantine art and the mythological aspects of antiquity, Tilson contaminates these elements with consistent vigour, introducing symbols from Indian and aboriginal cultures. He uses an accessible, contemporary language to revitalize images that are archetypal of their cultures, freely employing the expressive potential of primary symbols - air, water, fire, earth, enigmas and labyrinths.
