Beginning with the Study of Perspective (1995-present) series of photographs, in which Ai Weiwei gives the finger to sites of cultural and political power, the expression has become synonymous with the artist’s practice. The decorative patterning of the artist’s Finger wallpaper works to both conceal and reveal the gesture.
