Around the early hours of May 10, 1943, an atrocious fire began to consume the National Library of Peru. Before the firefighters managed to put out the last flames of fire, the search for explanations and those responsible for the incident began to speculate reasons and attribute blame. Two suspects were promptly arrested, although later released due to lack of evidence. The main hypothesis was that the fire had been committed deliberately due to the rapid spread of the fire and the violence of its horizontal action.
