The early morning of May 10, 1943 witnessed one of the most ominous episodes in the history of Peruvian culture: the National Library was on fire.
After arduous work during the early morning hours, at dawn the incident seemed finally to be controlled by firefighters. However, the flames tried to reignite near the Church of San Pedro, a threat that the firefighters managed to control. As a result of the episode, in addition to the multiple damages, at 10:15 in the morning, part of the Geographical Society building, located in the upper part of the premises, was finally demolished.
