Fish III

A large installation fountain feature of a series of Fish II titled, "Swimming against the Current" is located at the entrance to the University of Pretoria in University Road, Pretoria, South Africa. The bronze installation work depicts 34 fish swimming upstream by the South African sculptor, Isaac (Sakkie) Seoka (b.1967) from the University of Pretoria. Fish III in wood was one of the marquettes in 2011 for the commission of the fountain for the University of Pretoria. Short Biography: Isaac Seoka was born in 1967 in Venda and as an artist began carving his works in wood. Another South African sculptor and colleague, Guy du Toit (b.1958) assisted him in making the wax works for casting into bronze. This work was created with the idea of the fish as a symbol of knowledge, swimming upstream to gain new knowledge. According to Seoka, the university serves as an institution and fountain of knowledge where students must swim against the current of today, in order to achieve a better future. Short Biography: Isaac Seoka was born in Venda in 1967. In the 1980s, he became the sculpture studio assistant at the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria and he continues an artist working in Pretoria and contributes his works to several group exhibitions.
