Danish painter Peder Severin Kroyer (1851-1909) is an important figure in the School of Skagen, which brought various artists together to work in the same place, in the style of the School of Pont-Aven. It became part of the Scandinavian artistic renewal initiated in the 1860s.
From 1882, Kroyer spent several summers in Skagen, where he depicted the rustic life of fishermenurs.
This is the fishing haul's return at dusk. The composition is rigorous, with a foreground made up of several horizontal lines, interrupted by the movement of rays. In the upper half, the inclusion of boats leads the eye to the background, up to the full moon, crossing an imperceptible horizon. The combination of yellow and blue colors makes the blue hour, the particular time of evening when the sky is covered by a dark blue.
