Sevilla, Spain

Flat painted tile representing a cross on the Calvary, decorated with lacework forming 9-point stars on the hill and 12-point stars at the intersection of the arms. On either side are two 8-point stars and below initials of Jesus (IHS), set under a yoke, and Mary's (M) under a crown. The enamelled piece in white tin is decorated with ochre, cobalt blue, dark green and golden yellow, in addition to the black of the drawing.

Devotional pictures feature prominently among religious paintings, especially for outdoor use, given that the ceramic medium is a solution particularly suited to this end. These images turned the Baroque cities into enormous holy urban spaces.
