The food stores were built in 1946 by King Mutara III Rudahigwa as it was in other locations in the country after a severe hunger Ruzagayura between 1943 - 1944. Rudahigwa's intention was to have a long lasting remedy for any other future disasters that could hit the country. The local people could gather cereal crops to be stored most especially beans and sorghum and this would be collected by chiefs and sub - chiefs and taken to those who managed the stores After the demise of King Rudahigwa in 1959, the stores were being used as market place for food crops and other merchandise like cooking oil, sugar, etc.... In 1994, the stores were robbed. Thereafter, they were run by private sector until 1998 when they were handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal husbandry (MINAGRI) Currently, these food stores are used and managed by Rwanda Agricultural Board (RAB).
