Four Lilies Coverlet

This well-worn coverlet was made for Isabella Durham (nee McClive) in 1841 and attributed to a weaver in Welland County, who marked his work with a heart on its side. It is made with the second most popular coverlet pattern—Four Lilies. This pattern features four individual flowers (lilies) that are positioned facing outward in a square. Lilies usually represent innocence. While very little is known about Isabella’s life. We do know that she married James Durham (1805-1881) in December 1831 and they lived in the family home along the River Road in Queenston.
