Four Seasons of Woman

Uemura Shōen

Fukuda Art Museum

Fukuda Art Museum
Kyoto, Japan

In a comparative study, four women of different ages are portrayed in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. While the practice of musical skill and calligraphy were inspired by traditional themes, the artist’s unique sensibility is expressed in an unrealistic scene of four women in the same room, each attired for a different season. This work brings to mind a playful young artist who, almost like a girl dressing up dolls, uses her brush to have fun combining different kimono, obi, and hairstyles.
