“Every normal child does three things: he breaks things; he gets inside dolls or watches to see what is there; and he torments animals. I was a bad child. I did none of these things... And that, of course, is very bad. It is precisely for that reason, I suspect, that I was driven to become a film director. … Watches that I failed to take apart at the right time led to my passion for rooting around in the recesses and springs of the ‘creative mechanism’. Dinner services that were not smashed when they should have been were reborn as respect for authority and traditions. My cruelty, which did not find an outlet with flies, dragon-flies and frogs, coloured my choice of theme, method and the credo of my work as director.” Eisenstein
