Fulgora laternaria, also known as lantern fly, is the largest species of fulgoridae family. It is close relative of pyrops candelaria in Southern China. In Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and other places, it is said that after being bitten by this insect, treatment must be done within 24 hours, or one will die. In fact, this kind of cicada is harmless and will not attack people. The 8-cm-long insect is vegetarian feeding on tree sap. They use either heads or eye spots on the wing to disguise themselves. If both camouflage strategies fail, they can also emit an unbearable stench.
