This image of two bats (Pteropus funereus) appears in Gould's 'The mammals of Australia'.
The lithographic plates in this work are hand coloured, and were created by Henry Constantine Richter from drawings and watercolours made by John and Elizabeth Gould when they were in Australia, though the work of Elizabeth Gould is uncredited.
The lithographs for Gould's work were generally hand-coloured by a group of artists led by Gabriel Bayfield. These artists mostly worked at home, which is one of the reasons there are variations between copies.
