Gerwazy, the Steward

Gerwazy, the old steward is one of the characters described in the epic poem “Pan Tadeusz” by Adam Mickiewicz. The painter used a live model to pose for it, but dissatisfied with the final result, he cut up the canvas into pieces. The work was later bought and reconstructed by the new owner.
