In Florence they had lived two men, very skilled in their art, but of horrible appearance: Giotto, and Forese da Rabatta: the first of the greatest painters, the second expert on jurisprudence. It happened one day when they returned from Mugello to find themselves making the road together, but soon a big shower hit them and they were forced to take shelter indoors. When the rain stopped, they resumed their journey, arguing amicably. While they were still talking, Forese said that those who did not know Giotto in person would have difficulty believing that he was the greatest painter. To this Giotto, in turn, replied that anyone who had not known Forese personally would doubt that he was so learned.
