Gold chain

This chain was found along with diverse other pieces of gold jewellery in 1882, during excavations at the fortress of Vechten. In Roman times, this was the site of a fortress named Fectio. The jewellery was buried in a shallow pit, in a small wooden chest that had completely decomposed. To this day, it remains the finest Roman gold jewellery ever found in the Netherlands. Since not much is known about the precise details of the find, it is no longer possible to ascertain whether the jewellery belonged to the content of a grave or had been buried to prevent theft in times of danger. The links are decorated with palmettes, a very popular motif in Roman times.
