Golda Meir
Prime Minister of Israel
1898 - 1978
INDUCTED 1985
After spending two years as an emissary in the United States, Meir became Israel’s fourth prime minister in 1969 and served until 1974.
Golda Meir was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1898. When Meir was nine years old, her family immigrated to America. Determined to get an education, she came to live with her married sister in West Denver’s Jewish neighborhood. There she met leaders of the Social Zionist movement and grew concerned about the Jewish people’s future. Golda married and moved to Tel Aviv in 1921, where she moved quickly up the political ladder and became secretary of the Women’s Labor Council. After spending two years as an emissary in the United States, Meir helped write the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948.
"To be successful, a woman has to be much better at her job than a man.“ — Golda Meir
