In 1886, the Dairy Farm set up their pasture in Pokfulam to produce fresh uncontaminated milk. To ensure steady grass supply to feed the cattle, the Dairy Farm introduced prolific elephant grass in the pasture. In winter, when the grass grew more slowly, imported grass was needed. To avoid changing the entire feed for the cattle, the imported grass needed to be mixed with elephant grass. The grass silo was therefore built to store and preserve elephant grass from the summertime yield. The salted elephant grass would be raked out and distributed to the cowsheds during winter.
