Patrick Henry's Red Hill

Patrick Henry's Red Hill
Brookneal, Virginia, United States

Following his death at Red Hill on June 6, 1799, Virginia's first elected governor, Patrick Henry, was buried in a grove of trees near his home. For nearly 60 years, the celebrated orator's grave remained unmarked until 1858 when his son, John Henry, erected a simple tomb. A marble slab sits atop walls of ashlar sandstone quarried at Red Hill, with the epitaph, "His fame his best epitaph," carved under Henry's name.

Dorothea Dandridge, Patrick Henry's second wife, is buried next to him, her stone being placed simultaneously with her husband's. Despite more than a half-century without a marker, Henry's grave is now part of the Patrick Henry National Memorial at Red Hill to ensure his continued recognition.
