This flintlock, including its ornamental fitting, was part of a Prussian pistol of the 18th century. The flintstone hitting the gunpowder in the flashpan caused a spark, which ignited the main powder charge in the barrel. The German term Flinte for a certain type of guns is derived from this ignition system.
