Hayes was presented to him by the 23rd OVI Association at a reunion in Fremont Ohio, on September 14, 1877. The escutcheon was made by J.P. Reynolds & Co. and cost $100. Austine Snead writes on March 28, 1878, of the escutcheon hanging in the White House sitting room: ʺ... on the wall hangs a framed escutcheon painted in oil ...ʺ Frame is not original.
