This head comes from a statue which stood in the tomb of the man represented. It has been executed in the extremely hard stone, quartzite, and the eyes are in the even harder stone, quartz. In the tomb the statue assumed the role of the dead person himself. When priests presented offerings of food and drink in the tomb, the “soul” of the dead person came forth to inhabit the statue and received the offerings.
