Although the main characteristic of opals is their play-of-color, produced by the diffraction of light in the hydrated silica spheres that make up opals, if we observe them under a microscope we can find very curious inclusions, as in the case seen in the photograph, where you can see small red inclusions throughout the gem, probably hematite.
