The installation is displayed in an alleyway, its colors vivid and the scenes familiar, reminding viewers of a long forgotten film scene…
Artist Agi Chen grew up in an “image thinking” era; to her, cartoon characters represent an abstract and virtual reality. Through television and other media, this reality is broadcasted to the public over and over again, filling their visual memory with flashy colors. In an investigation of the relationship between abstract and concrete symbols, Chen removes cartoon and comic characters from their settings, leaving instead a series of concentric circles. These memorable scenes, with their abstract and tangible images, call many visual memories from the backs of our minds.
Diagon Alley, from the world of Harry Potter, is only accessible by wizards and witches. It is a secret corner much like a fire lane, kept in the interest of safety, always forgotten by those who pass by it. Threading through apartment buildings, these spaces are unique to Taipei’s architecture. Through the effort of the residents, the alleyways have become a magical passage that, for those who notice their existence, is home to many fond memories.
