Historical site. The site was identified during the land development project in the Uncheon-dong, Cheongju area in 1985 and through excavation work, the sites of the Main Hall, West Corridor Hall and Lecture Hall of Heungdeoksa Temple were identified. Thanks to the excavation of a metal gong inscribed with 'Heungdeoksa Temple', the site was identified as the place of Heungdeoksa Temple, where Jikji, the book printed with the oldest extant movable metal type, was printed. Heungdeoksa Temple is presumed to have served as a temple from the late Unified Silla period to the end of Goryeo Dynasty.
