Highway: America’s Endless Dream

New York, United States

Jeff Brouws’ Highway: America’s Endless Dream examines the interstate as both monument and mirror—an enormous national script written in asphalt, signage, and the choreography of departure. Within Aesthetics, Brouws frames the road as a vast kinetic gallery: gas stations glowing like desert chapels, motels promising comfort through neon prophecy, and billboards insisting on desire as direction. Through Archival Intelligence, the volume documents how policy, commerce, and nostalgia have shaped landscapes into narratives of longing, erasure, and reinvention. For the Black Imagination, the highway becomes metaphor—avenue of migration, corridor of seeking, a place where possibility and precarity run parallel. Brouws’ photographs refuse the myth of neutrality; they honor the overlooked seams of American life, from weathered towns to rest-stop rituals. The result is a meditation on movement itself, revealing the open road not as escape but as witness—an architecture of dreams, detours, and the unending search for home.
