Makoto Ikutake is a former primary school teacher turned Yokohama-based illustrator who works on illustrations for advertisements, books, textbooks, murals, and other media. This work is based on his research into the history and culture of Japanese migrants and their lives abroad. It is a participatory work in which one can enjoy coloring in the picture while learning about the history of Japanese migrants. The work is filled with scenes from towns inhabited by Japanese migrants to the United States, Central and South America, and elsewhere, as well as scenes from their daily lives and local culture. It conveys the courage, hard work, and history of such migrants, spanning several generations at their new homes. In the center of the work is JICA Yokohama, which strives to connect Japanese-descended communities throughout the world with Japan itself, and the Port of Yokohama from which many emigrant ships departed. Join in the coloring and learn about the history and culture of Japanese migrants.
