“Homosexuality”
“In the Middle Ages, they were burned alive. Today, they are considered criminals in many countries, marginalized in all societies. For weeks, journalist Hamilton Almeida experienced the sad and inhumane world of the men who deny their condition as men.” (article published in Realidade magazine, November of 1967)
From June to September of 1967, Andujar photographed the daily routine of gay men in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The images of a couple in São Paulo were staged in telenovela soap opera style at a photography studio. In Rio, Andujar frequented nightclubs and spots for nighttime encounters. It is likely that she took the photos for the sensationalist article that the magazine published on the subject in November. But the article was printed without images, which suggests that the feature was censored.
