National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This wooden honey barrel has a leather lid and bottom. It is made by a male craftsman who also makes stools and beehives. It is made from muthaiti tree (Ocotea usambarensis) covered with zebra skin. The skin tops are put on when wet and bound round with a string. When dry the string is removed and a cover is perfectly fitted. It is used by the old men who go to collect honey.
