This veritable jewel was designed by the famous Dutch astronomer and physicist Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695). He succeeded in creating a high performance, easy to use instrument thanks to a diaphragm and the object revolver. It was made and engraved by Jean de Pouilly for a clientele of wealthy amateurs.
