Regulators of liturgical time, which once oversaw the tempos of the Douro people’s daily lives, the belfries frame the churches’ façades and are a mark on the landscape. The churches, in the centre or outskirts of the settlements, have always been the epicentres of local and community life, on which religious rites and faith converge, bringing the communities together.
