Ilha (Island) in Fontaínhas

Straddling the steep slopes of the Douro, the district known as Fontaínhas is a ragged hotchpotch of old farms, 19th century factory ruins – attesting to the city’s industrial development – and working class neighborhoods made up of cheap, densely packed houses and poor living conditions – the so-called ilhas (islands). Assembled in the 19th century, following the arrival of migrants from the north of the country, the ilhas emerged in various areas of Porto but primarily in the eastern part of the city.
