The engraving by the Japanese master Utagawa Yoshitaki for the series “54 chapters of Genji in modern manner”. The 11th c. “Tale of Prince Genji” (Genji Monogatari) is sometimes called the oldest novel in the world. The work was written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting in the imperial manor who lived in the Heian period.
