The Alpine salamander climbs high up into the Alps, reaching altitudes of up to 2,800 metres, and is even found above the tree line. In order to survive in cold high mountain ranges where water is in short supply, it gives birth to live-born young after a long gestation period of two to three years, making it independent of streams.
