When in 1860 Szermentowski left for Paris, thanks to his contacts with the French landscape artists of the so-called School of Barbizon, he was able to further his studies of painting en plein air, as clearly demonstrated by this picture. Relaxed brushstrokes and skilfully painted reflexes of sunlight on the canvas demonstrate the artist’s modern approach to the subject of landscape painting.
