Inconspicuous details

The use of fabric made with inconspicuous details is exemplary of Edo taste. Benitōzan is Indian cotton fabric with striped pattern. It was exported to Japan from Port St. Thomas and the name converted to santome and eventually became tōzan. In Japan there are also Kawagoe-tōzan and Tateyama-tōzan fabrics, although these were created as imitations of the Indian striped cotton fabric that was much desired.
