This is one of the many versions of the highly copied theme depicted by Caravaggio in the canvas painted for the Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani (c.1600-1601), purchased in 1815 by the King of Prussia and now preserved in the Potsdam Gallery. The size of the Veronese canvas (51.8 × 61.8 cm) is smaller than the original by Caravaggio, which measures 107 × 146 cm – these dimensions were respected by almost all the copies that reproduce, even in the format, the Giustiniani canvas. The peculiarity of the Veronese version can be seen in the expressive accentuation of the figures and in the jagged and material drapery.
