With the establishment of Fatimid rule in Egypt and Syria, trade came to be more strongly oriented towards the western Mediterranean. The Fatimids left clear traces on Sicily especially, even after its conquest by the Christian Normans (second half of the 11th century) and through the Staufen period up into the 13th century.
