Lily van der Stokker has been working as an artist since the 1980’s. Originally, she made paintings and drawings, but nowadays she is known mainly for her wall paintings, which are unique in their kind. They are girlish, charming, colourful, unashamedly decorative and covered with flowers, clouds and trivial phrases like ‘Jack is 60’ and ‘Olga is a little bitch’. In Van der Stokker’s work, art appears to have slipped out of its role for a moment. The whole is most reminiscent of girls’ scribbles in their diaries. Her visual idiom, texts and use of colour stand for resistance against ‘Art with a capital A’, but they are also optimistic and allow room for imagination. Although she claims not to make ironic work, when looking at works like the drawing ‘wij hebben het zwaar’ or the sculpture ‘vergaderen’, the viewer gets the feeling that she at least enjoys putting things into perspective. Since 1992, Lily van der Stokker has created more than 150 wall paintings all over the world.
