Carefully thought-out themes, particular framing, characters in elaborate poses. Highcontrasts, and subtle gradients of black and white, capture mining equipment, wooden frames cracked and bent under the burden of time, narrow tunnels overgrown with salt crystals, and giant open chambers, long since inaccessible. The viewer is struck by this alien landscape, seemingly out of place and out of time. The eerie sensation is further amplified by miners’ silhouettes, frozen in motion, whose lamps cast as much light as shadow.
