Detail of photograph of James H. Jones (1831-1921), a free Black man from Wake County, North Carolina, in the employ of Jefferson Davis in Richmond during the American Civil War. He served Davis as a coachman and courier. After the war, Jones returned to Raleigh and participated in political and civic life.
