Charleston, SC, United States

An exact contemporary of the artist, James Reid Pringle was painted three times by Fraser. Pringle was active in political affairs, serving as President of the Senate of South Carolina, 1814-1818, as Collector of the Port of Charleston, and during the nullification controversy he was the successful Union Party candidate for Intendant of Charleston. At one time attributed to Edward Greene Malbone, this portrait bears marked similarities to his miniatures, especially in the cross-hatched background and the placement of the sitter. However, it is more tentative and less sophisticated than Malbone's miniatures of this date.
