  • Provenance: A gift to President Rutherford B. Hayes from the Japanese Emperor through the Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Yoshida, in 1880. On March 10, 1881, Rutherford Hayes wrote to Mr. Evarts, his former White House Secretary of State: "This evening I discovered a box in the garret, the contents of which is the occasion of my writing tonight. Just as we were starting for California last summer a box from Mr. Yoshida came to the White House. It contained an elegant stand of Japanese work and a small group in bronze..."
