Located in one of the migrant ships' departure cities of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum was opened simultaneously with the establishment of JICA Yokohama in 2002 to educate the public about the history of Japanese migration overseas, the countries to which Japanese migrants travelled, the roles played by migrants and their contributions to Japan, and their current status. Because one of JICA's predecessor organizations played a part in post-war migration programs for Latin America and elsewhere, this exhibition focuses primarily on migration to Latin America as well as even earlier migrant destinations such as Hawaii and elsewhere in North America. Although the migration program has been ended, JICA continues to the present day to run programs connecting Japanese-descended communities in Latin America with Japan.
