Pedro de Campaña was the most famous painter in the artistic scene during the Sevillian Renaissance. Trained in Holland, before settling in Sevilla, he spent many years in Italy. On this board, Mary is seated at the foot of the Cross, holding the dead body of Jesus. Mary Magdalene bends to kiss them. The other figures, Joseph of Arimathea, the Holy Women, and St. John the Evangelist, contemplate the scene. The style of the master is clear in the foreshortened figure of Mary Magdalene. The work on the hands, eyes and other details contain parts which are not of the same quality. According to Nicole Dacos, the colours of the work, less varied and intense than those used by the master, lead us to believe that a disciple of Pedro de Campaña intervened in the painting.
