Sevilla, Spain

A box in the shape of a hound lying on the ground. With lid. White background with manganese spots. Polychrome in yellow, ochre, green and manganese. Oval base.

This piece belongs to the series "Fauna de Alcora", which was produced from the middle of the second period ((1742-1798) and, especially, during the third period of manufacturing in the Royal Factory of Alcora (1798-1858). The series consists of soup bowls, sauce boats, terrines, dessert dishes and paper weights, depicting countless animals such as lions, dogs, ducks, cockerels and hens, deer, rams, etc. Although the pieces did not tend to be signed, Cristóbal Mas and Clement Aicart had a reputation as model-makers and produced pieces of greater quality.

A similar example is held in the Colección Conde Casal Collection (Escrivá de Romaní, Manuel. Historia de la Cerámica de Alcora. Madrid, 1919; lam. 96 p. 245).
