Kalisz Double Basses

The double basses known as "Kalisz basses" are characterized by an elongated neck that extends into the body of the instrument. Their shape resembles violins, though they do not retain the proportions of violins. The resonance body, including the back and sides, is carved from a single piece of wood. The top plate is slightly convex and is nailed to the body with nails. These basses were typically two or three-stringed, with four-stringed versions being rarer. The basses were played using either straight or curved bows. The performer held the instrument with one hand while drawing the bow across the strings with the other. While playing, the instrument produced a characteristic low, rhythmic sound. The player held the bass in hand, never placing it on the ground, even if the instrument was larger in size.
One of the key instruments in the Kalisz band, it was often accompanied by violins.
