Kayenzi and Ijwi island

Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy
Kigali, Rwanda

The first attack King Kigeri IV Rwabugiri made on Ijwi crossed the Kayenzi of Nyamirundi; but it was difficult for them to cross because Kabego's army had found out and set up a camp in Nyakarengo under the command of Kayenzi, waiting for the Rwandans to cross and resist them without escaping. When Rwabugiri saw that the troops from Ijwi refused to surrender, he divided his army into two groups: some remained with him at Kayenzi, the others went to the farm and returned to Mwaga, and went to Bitare and Rwamatamu to cross Mpembe and attack the Ijwi from the north. Kayenzi is now in Kayenzi Village, Ntango District, Nyabitekeri Sector.
