Kelly Alexander Sr. reactivated the dormant Charlotte branch of the NAACP in 1940, serving as its president from 1940-1944 and as its executive secretary from 1944 to his death in April 1985. Alexander built the North Carolina chapter into the largest chapter in the nation with over 120 branches statewide, earning the nickname “Mr. NAACP” through his tireless fieldwork throughout the state.
